【Abstract】 Objective To investigate the effect of vitamin E (Vit E) on estrogen and expression of aromatase in hippocampus of senile female rats and explore the effect of Vit E on preventing from postmenopausal female central nerve system degenerative diseases and its mechanism. Methods The animal model was established using senile female rats. Rats in low, middle and high dose of Vit E experimental groups (n=8) were respectively Vit E 5, 15 and 60 mg·kg-1·d-1. The levels of serum estrogen was detected by radioimmunoassay. The expression of aromatase in hippocampus was detected by immunohistochemistry. Results Compared with adult control group, the estrogen of elderly control group was low. And the estrogen of middle and high dose of Vit E groups were recovered (P<0.05), the expressions of aromatase in hippocampus from the two groups increased. The expression of aromatase in hippocampus in high dose of Vit E group showed strong positive. Conclusions Some dose of Vit E may not only elevate the level of serum estrogen, but strengthen the expression of aromatase in hippocampus, increase content of local estrogen and protect the nerve.
